Pools sign released Man Utd youngster

Richie Jones
By Clarence Rode July 4 2008
Hartlepool have made their second signing of the summer, and it's another midfield player. Wanted by a string of other clubs, Richie Jones has agreed to move to the Vic from European Champions Manchester United and join what looks like being healthy competition for midfield places in manager Danny Wilson's team.

Jones, who is 21 and a former England under-19 international, has played for the Man Utd first team five times, and has also had loan spells at Colchester, Barnsley and Yeovil, where he was a sub in their 3-1 win over Pools in the first half of last season.
The move came as something of a surprise to some fans, especially after boss Wilson told the Hartlepool Mail: "It is true that we had an interest in him last year. But there are areas that we have to identify before that and maybe bringing in Alan Power has stalled that one a bit."
That comment promoted the Mail to write off a possible deal with Jones, who was also interesting Tranmere, Blackpool, Burnley and Hearts. Danny's attempt to throw other clubs off the scent appears to have worked.
Jones's name has been removed from the list of Man U player profiles on their website, but that well-known football authoriy, Wikipedia, says: "Jones has been a member of the Manchester United F.C. Academy since the age of nine. Jones scored the Golden Goal to win the Milk Cup in 2003, beating Preston in the final. He captained United's Youth Cup team and was part of the United reserve side that won four trophies in 2004–05, and three trophies in 2005–06.
"Jones has also played for England at U15, U16, U17 (scoring the winning goal for the side in the Nordic Championship final in Sweden), U18, U19 and U20 levels. He was a member of the England Under-19 squad that reached the final of the UEFA European Under-19 Football Championship in July 2005, before losing out to France. He acted as captain during some of these matches."
Not a bad pedigree, then.
Now, midfield's up to strength - or it should be - so it's time to sign a full-back or two and a striker.
