Puck Headlines: Naslund's success rests on Rangers' chemistry

Here are your Puck Headlines: A glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

• We'll say this about Markus Naslund signing with the New York Rangers: If the money is right (and CBC is reporting $8 million), then two years is OK. The deal lives or dies depending on his chemistry with Chris Drury, Brandon Dubinsky and/or Scott Gomez (especially that last guy, who could  put 35 goals on Naslund's stick). Meanwhile, Canucks fans are starting to sound off on his departure. Overall, not a bad move for the Rangers ... although the AP believes this officially ends Jaromir Jagr's tenure with the team.

Dmitri Kalinin for one year is also a coup, as he was rated the fourth-best defenseman on the market by The Hockey News. Not that we agree with the ranking ... would you take him over Brooks Orpik?

• There's a good chance Fedorov will be a New Jersey Devil. Fedor Fedorov. [Fire & Ice]

• "Sure, Mats Sundin deserves to call his own shots, but does he need to screw over the rest of the league while doing it?" [Sportsnet]

• Satan is Pittsburgh's motor. Well, and Ruslan Fedotenko, too. Pittsburgh Penguins fans will buy more black and gold Satan T-shirts than WWGRD and Marian Hossa gear sold combined. [Eddy Spaghetti]

• Seven years, $35 million for Marc-Andre Fleury. He's just as much the franchise as Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are now. Sportsnet looks at the his fantasy hockey impact, because it's never too early to think about such things.

The latest on Dan Boyle: The Sharks, Canucks, Flyers, Islanders, Senators and Thrashers could all be in the mix if he decides to waive his no-trade clause. Or, as Damian Cristodero of Lighting Strikes reports, "it is believed Tampa Bay could at some point put him on waivers and expose him to the entire league." Wow. Meanwhile, Scott Burnside of ESPN reports that the Tampa Bay Lightning have given Boyle's agent permission to work out his own deal with another team. (Only the byline on the story as of 5:20 p.m. was "Dan Boyle," which is really quite funny.)

• The top 10 Sean Avery moments. [Andrew's Stars Blog]

• The 10 worst free-agent signings by Detroit teams. Hockey holds the top spot. [Snapshots]

• Marian Hossa fed Pittsburgh Penguins fans some happy sunshine before he left for the Detroit Red Wings. [The Confluence of the Three Rivers]

• Finally, we'll have a few updates and items on July 4. If anything breaks, Puck Daddy will be here ... until the grill is hot and the beer chills.

Naslund is not going to have chemistry with this rangers squad and when he doesn't have talent around him he ends up stinking.
As for Satan and Fedotenko...Fedotenko is a streaky player but clutch golden (Drury-lite) come playoff time. Satan's speed should compliment the centers on either of the two lines and the 1 year contracts will mean these guys should step it up so they can get more money next year in free agency. Fed won't score over 20 goals but Satan should be able to return to form on this team and hit 30 if he stays healthy and out of Therrien's dog house.

I feel really bad for Boyle...he's building a new house and his pregnant wife is from the area...and it's just a bad situation and shows a lack of class and "man up" from the Lightning. Plus do the lightning really want to lose another defenseman when all they've signed is offensive players? They're going to have to trade Smith and one (or more) of their less than talented offensive players to get a good stay at home defenseman before the season starts...please tell me they're doing this?!?

Naslund is a very welcome addition. $4 million per year? Sounds great to me! He's just removed from a 25 goals season and with all the problem Vancouver had with goals, we can't only put the blame on him for this.

You have to have that intodays NHL!! They also will get not grit and toughness from redden and rozival! Rag fans prey Sather locks up Stall!! This team is very soft up front , where are the defensive forward , and where is there forecheck??? from Naslund?Gomer?lol Remeber Holweg, Voros, Orr hardly get any playing time!!!

There is a report coming out of Pittsburgh that Mario Lemieux has had several conversations with Jagr to bring him back to the Steel City. Now that Naslund has signed with the Rangers, its almost a sure deal.

Naslund with Gomez? I think we might like that. I would like to see Dawes with Gomez and Naslund. Drury with Callahan and Zherdev. Dubinsky with Fritche and korpikoski.

Naslund's heart and soul left the Canucks when Bertuzzi did. He is a shadow of his former self. NYR are once again turning into a retirement home, and Glen Sather has returned to his pre lockout self, of overpaying for players past their prime.

Pretty pathetic move by the rangers. Overpaid for Redden, didnt wanna pay for Avery, and now didnt resign Jagr so they could get Naslund?? Thats pretty lame...If they would have gotten Sundin it would have been different but I think they shot themselves in the foot. I wanna see Jagr sign with the Pens so he could come back and rip his old team. Sather is gonna regret this move.

Habs fans are worse than the criers in Pitt. and the shameful group in TO combined!!! all I hear is once we add Hossa...once we add Sundin...once we add Jagr... you added NO one and now you only have blind unrealistic hope with no real chance of success!! You have no chance to get to the East finals, let alone beat a western conf. playoff team!!! Anyway.... it's a moot point cause the Wings are going to go 68-9-5 next year and sweep thier way to back to back cups. Have a nice summer and we'll see how things unfold in October. Welcome to Hockeytown Hossa! Go Wings!!!!

That's nonsense. If the Habs just add some more grit and a punishing defenseman they are in a good position to come out of the east (if they can beat Pittsburgh). Price will only get better and they're scoring ability is scary.

What good did all those great free agent pickups do for Tampa if they throw away their only good defenseman? May as well just shoot poor Kolzig in the head and put him out of his misery.

As a Ranger fan, I think we lost a big opportunity in Hossa. Hossa could've been a great asset to the team. We will never know. It could have been a Jagr type situation where Jagr's style didnt fit in with our two free agent signings from last yr ,Drury and Gomez. Naslund was great 4 years ago.I hope we are not reverting back to our old ways and buy name players past there prime.

Rangers will be fine. The King is enough to solidify the defense. I just feel the East plays second fiddle to the West though. I predict the East will finish as follows: 1) Philly 2) Jersey 3) Pitt 4) Monteal 5) Boston 6) Washinton 7) NYR 8) TB.... Many others have said it though it is only July 4 and the rosters will continue to change.
