Sailor takes round-the-world lead

New York yacht
The Scots skipper has taken his team to the lead of the race

A skipper from south west Scotland has moved into the overall lead of a round-the-world yacht race.

Duggie Gillespie, 41, of Kirkcudbright, has put his boat - the New York - at the top of the rankings in the 35,000-mile Clipper challenge.

He steered his team to victory in the latest stage, from Jamaica to New York, to move into first place.

He said he was "very proud" of his crew who could now be crowned winners when the race ends in Liverpool in July.

The leg to New York was one of the closest in the race so far with the top six teams finishing within eight nautical miles of one another.

'New experience'

The Scots skipper said: "I am extremely pleased with our win.

"The team worked really hard under busy light wind conditions and I am very proud of them all.

"It is a new experience for me to go to New York and what better way than to lead the fleet into our home port."

Mr Gillespie was a late call-up to the round-the-world challenge.

He joined the New York in October last year after her original skipper suffered a leg injury.
