Councils bid for £47m bike cash
A national drive to find the first cycling city and a number of cycling towns in England has been launched after success in Darlington.

Cycling England is inviting councils to bid for a share of a £47m fund aimed at promoting cycling across the country.

It follows success across 10 pioneering towns in 2005, including Darlington which was given £1.5m.

The north east town has reported a big rise in cycling and is expected to bid for a slice of the new cash on offer.

Cycling England chairman Phillip Danton said scores of local authorities had expressed an interest in the project to improve cycling facilities.
