Two people have been killed by an explosion in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo, officials say.

Nine more people were injured when a hand grenade exploded in the densely-populated area of Wellawatte, according to police reports.

Victims were rushed to the nearby Kalubowila Hospital.

Earlier this week, 11 died when a bomb exploded inside a commuter train in an attack blamed on Tamil Tigers. The rebel group denied it was responsible.

The motive behind the most recent blast was not immediately apparent.

Police at the scene said it may have been the result of a gang dispute, AFP news agency reported.
