Ways of Working: a blog by Jeff Shiver

Assemble the pieces

If I could give just a couple of suggestions for people about to implement change initiatives, what would they be?

1) Get leadership buy-in and support

2) Create a Champion to serve as a Facilitator or Implementation Leader

3) Take a little more time to develop a Plan of Improvement that addresses all aspects.

4) Execute the Plan and make it a living document. Add items/ tasks as required and update it frequently.

5) Communicate, Communicate, Communicate! No matter how much you do, odds are you are still under-communicating by a factor of 10 or even 100 times.

Expanding on #3 for example, you can’t introduce Planning and Scheduling to an organization unless you address organizational alignment (roles and responsibilities), create Partnerships with Operations, Materials Management, and Procurement to name a few. While we can plan and schedule on a sheet of paper, a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) goes a long way to helping move the effort forward. If the CMMS is not implemented correctly, then it’s hard to effectively Plan and Schedule work.

What are your thoughts?
