Addicts turn to diazepam as a heroin alternative

THE tranquilliser once known as "mother's little helper" is growing in popularity among drug addicts as an alternative to heroin, it was claimed today.
Charity DrugScope said larger numbers of people are abusing diazepam, also known as Valium.
Addicts are combining it with strong alcohol or methadone in a potentially lethal cocktail to ease the effects of withdrawal from crack cocaine. It may also be growing as a cheap option to heroin, as heroin supplies have suffered a slump in purity.
